24: The Unaired 1994 Pilot

I can't even believe my CSE professor posted a video from college humour under our Week 1 folder on blackboard, how awesome is that?! But nonetheless the video is hilarious! In this episode Jack Bauer saves the world with AOL 3.0

The "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," Philosopy

Whoever said "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," is, for lack of better words, a complete imbecile. Clearly they are incapable of speaking proper english, and furthermore, if humanity had followed that logic throughout the course of history, we would still be riding in horse drawn chariots, the "new world" would still be undiscovered, and the mere idea of allowing women to vote would be deemed ludicrous. This quote is used by anti-activists and lazy people alike and is a sorry excuse for a life philosophy. I personally think that change is necessary and beneficial to humanity. It advances our technology, our culture, our society, laws, schools of thought, and much, much more. I'm sure there will be many who disagree but to them I say, go live in the stone age, or even the middle ages and then tell me that change is not necessary.

Now I know, what some of you are thinking, 2 blog posts in 1 day! Well sorry, I just couldn't resist, this video is really cool. Enjoy!

New Software of Note

The 3 software apps/programs I have downloaded lately have proved to be quite useful so I will share them with you. The best part, they are free. Well, except for sleep cycle, but hey it's only 0.99 USD.
  1. Sleep Cycle (iPhone) 0.99 USD
    • I don't know if it was coincidence or if this thing actually works, but I woke up feeling great this morning and I'm blaming this app. Basically how it works is you put it on the corner of your mattress and roll around in bed to calibrate it. You are basically checking to see if the accelerometer inside the iPhone can detect your movement. If it does it will make a sound so you know it's calibrated properly. Once this is done, all that's left to do is plug it in, set it at the corner of your bed, set the alarm, and turn it face down (don't lock your iPhone) and fall asleep. If you set the alarm say for 0830, then starting at 0800 it will start searching for a time before 0830 to wake you up. It uses the accelerometer to tell when you are and aren't in a deep sleep and chooses the most opportune time to wake you within that half hour time frame. It seemed to work last night, and I will update this blog within a few days to let you know whether it's coincidence or in fact a miracle!

  2. Dropbox (Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone) Free
    • This application works wonders. Before Dropbox, I had to email myself with the attached file to pull it up on another computer. Or there was always the option of going on an endless search for one of my many USB drives. Needless to say, this application renders all of that unnecessary. Basically how it works, is you go to http://dropbox.com and download this free application for your operating system. You install the application to your hard drive and voila! You now have a folder on your hard drive titled dropbox and you can save whatever you need to take with you there. Now any time you are on another computer, all you have to do is go to Dropbox's website and log in and you have access to all your files. This will prove to be incredibly useful.

  3. True Crypt (Windows, Mac) Free
    • This may or may not prove useful to you depending on how concerned you are about being hacked but I personally find it somewhat relaxing to have your most important or confidential files encrypted. I'm not going to try to explain how this works, if you are interested, they have a wonderful help section on their website for you. You can use this program to create an encrypted volume or to encrypt an entire hard drive, USB drive, partition, etc. http://www.truecrypt.org/
Hope you guys enjoy these great applications! Until next time...adios amigos!

Refusing Complacency

So my zeal with which I started this blog has died down as can be seen from the increasingly infrequent postings. However I am still at it and that is promising! Anyway, life has been good, somehow busy, but good. You may ask yourself, how can a student that is currently on break and unemployed be busy. Let me tell you, between spending time with family and friends, and my online psychology course, heading to the gym, playing soccer, and of course Assassin's Creed 2, it is entirely possible.

The employment situation is looking up, just landed a job interview at Go Daddy and am excited for the opportunity. From what I hear, it is an excellent company to work for and they pay very well.

I just finished reading a blog of a friend of mine, Kevin. He talked about, in short, how he always saw the change he wanted to make in his life, but never followed through with it. I have always in a way felt the same about my life, and recently I have started following through and it has and continues to make all the difference. Like Kevin's blog I also fear this is not making sense. Let me explain.

I think it is far too easy to become complacent with yourself, with the way you are and the things you don't like about yourself. I think in today's society, too many people give up way too easily and it's really starting to aggravate me. Way too many people say to themselves school is not for me and just give up when in reality they hardly even gave it a chance. Too many people say to themselves, I am too fat, oh well. Too many people say, I wish I was more outgoing, but that's just who I am. Too many people think they are depressed and unhappy and never do anything to change it. If you think you are overweight and don't like it, then either do something about it or stop complaining. If you want to be more outgoing, then do something about it, become a leader in a group, make an effort to meet more people, do things you wouldn't normally do. If you think you're not happy, then change it. Adopt a positive attitude, do more stuff with friends, get out in the world and have fun, there's plenty of fun and rewarding activities if you look for them. I think far too many people become complacent with the way they are whether they like it or not.

I feel this post has been, shall we say, somewhat negative. So let's end it on a positive note. I am an optimistic person, I just can't stand when I see people throwing their lives away or not pursuing what they want. We live in the US and as such we have incredible opportunities and it would be a shame to waste them because there are plenty of people in poor 3rd world countries who would kill for the opportunities we have. God has blessed us with much, so in return he expects much from us. He expects us to use what we have been given. So get up, stop complaining, and refuse to be complacent. As cliche as this sounds, be the change you want to see in your life!
